WILLIAM FERGUSSON. ALS: "Wm Fergusson", 2p, 4½x7.
Hanover Square, W., 1865 February 18. On imprinted, black-bordered
stationery to R.T.C. Scott, Esqr. Begins: "My dear Sir". In
full: "From all you state regarding Captn [illegible] I am of
opinion that his case would be very amenable to Surgical Treatments - under
the circumstances however a temporary [illegible] Course might possibly
be best, and in order that the last should be selected, its (sic) all by
right that he should come to town. If he will call here any morning between 10
and 12.30 I shall be glad to give my opinion after personal
inspection. Most sincerely". Scottish surgeon William Fergusson
(1808-1877) operated on cleft palates and harelips, inventing a forceps
that is still in use. He succeeded Robert Liston as Surgeon to the Edinburgh
Royal Infirmary in 1836 before becoming Professor of Surgery at King's
College London in 1840. Fergusson's works include The Progress of Anatomy
and Surgery in the Nineteenth Century (1867) and System of Practical
Surgery (1842), which was reprinted in several editions. He was created a
Baronet in 1866. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Lightly soiled.
Minor show through of ink. Mounting strip at right margin of verso partially
obscures three words. Overall, fine condition.
