The Parliament member and renowned surgeon signs his name on this handwritten letter from 1906
Autograph letter signed: "W Collins", 2p, 4¾x7½, front and verso. House of Commons, 1906 December 3. To unknown recipient. Begins: "Dear Sir". In full: "Yest I put a question down unstarred as to death of Mr Scall at [illegible] I had a letter from War Office asking me to postpone - I have agreed to do so but am also considering whether I should but put it down for oral answer [illegible]". William Job Collins (1859-1946), who served in Parliament as a Liberal representing West St. Pancras from 1906-1910, was also serving on Britain's Vivisection Committee (1906-1912) at the time of this letter.While in Parliament, Collins, who also represented Derby from 1917-1918, was instrumental in the promotion of the Metropolitan Ambulance Act that established ambulance service in London. A British surgeon, politician and legislator, who specialized in anatomy and ophthalmology, Collins was a Fellow, scholar and gold medalist in Sanitary Science and Obstetrics at the University of London, graduating as an MD in 1882. A critic of the smallpox vaccine in the late 1880s, Collins wrote a book on the topic and served on the Commission on Vaccination from 1889-1896. Collins, who was knighted in 1902, served two terms as Vice Chancellor of the University of London (1907-1909, 1911-1912). He was also Vice-Lieutenant of the County of London from 1925-1945. Lightly creased with fold, not at signature. Lightly soiled on verso of integral leaf, light blue pencil mark (unknown hand) at upper left margin on first page. Fine condition.
