WILLIAM SMITH
A rare signature from the prolific English lexicographer
Signature: "Wm. Smith, D.C.L., Lt.D.", in black ink,
5x2¾. Sir William Smith (1813-1893) was an English lexicographer.
Originally intending to follow a theological career, Smith eventually
strayed from theology, and instead began studying classical literature. It was
this studying that led him to gain an interest in lexicology, first publishing
A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities. After publishing two
more works on the Greek and Romans, he published several school dictionaries,
and later wrote the 1,214 page Latin-English
Dictionary based upon the works of Forcellini and Freund.
After many publications, Smith went to the University of London where he
became a classical examiner, later becoming a member of their Senate upon
retirement. Top and left edge frayed. Small stain on bottom margin. Corners
slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
