SKEETER DAVIS

Photograph signed: "love/Skeeter Davis". B/w, 8x10. Name imprinted at lower margin. Born Mary Frances Penick in 1931, "Skeeter" Davis was one of the top-ranking country singers by 1957 and became a regular member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1959. She was one of RCA's most successful country artists during the 1960s, charting 38 country hits, 13 of which crossed over to the pop charts. Her pop hits included her No. 2 song, "The End of the World" (1963) and "I Can't Stay Mad at You" (also a Top 10 hit in 1963). Although her career had waned somewhat by the early 1970s, Davis, who also recorded duets with Bobby Bare, Porter Wagoner and George Hamilton IV, made a brief comeback in the 1980s after recording an album with NRBQ (the New Rhythm and Blue Quartet). She also married the group's bass player, Joey Spampinato. Davis died of cancer on September 19, 2004 at the age of 72. Fine condition.
