WESTERN FILM STARS: SLIM ANDREWS, DOROTHY HART, WILL HUTCHINS, CAL SHRUM
Program for the June 1986 Western Film and Memorabilia Festival in Asheville, North Carolina, signed by four Western stars on their respective biography pages
Inscribed program signed: "To Carl,/"Slim" Andrews", "To Carl/Happiness/always!/Dorothy Hart", "Howdy, Carl!/You vill/get vell!/Dat's /an/order!!/Your Pal/Will/Hutchins/Sugarfoot/[rabbit drawing]", To/Carl/Howdy/Cal Shrum", 11 pages, 8½x11. Program for the June 1986 Western Film and Memorabilia Festival. Screen and television actor WILL HUTCHINS (born Marshall Lowell Hutchason in 1932) played an "aw-shucks" young frontier lawyer, Tom Brewster, on the popular TV series, Sugarfoot (1957-1960). After film roles, which included Merrill's Marauders (1962), TV guest appearances and a shorter-lived series (as Dagwood in Blondie, 1968), free spirit Hutchins moved on to the role of circus clown and ringmaster and traveled widely through the world. He returned to the big screen occasionally, appearing in such films as Maverick (1994) and Gunfighter (1998). Actor Lloyd "SLIM" ANDREWS (1906-1992) was sometimes billed as "Arizona Slim" Andrews in the films he made between 1940 (Rhythm of the Rio Grande) and 1952 (Buffalo Bill in Tomahawk Territory). Andrews appeared as Texas Ritter's sidekick in several films, including the one shown here. Andrews, whose song "Wastin' Time" was heard in his 1940 film, Arizona Frontier, later hosted a children's show in Joplin, Missouri in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was the father of actor John Andrews. Former model DOROTHY HART (1923-2004) signed a contract with Columbia Pictures in 1946 stipulating her appearance in "A-movies only." Nevertheless, she appeared mainly in B-movies, an exception being her notable role in the 1948 film, Naked City. After playing Jane in Tarzan's Savage Fury (1952), she retired from the screen. Western musician and actor CAL SHRUM (1910-1996) is best known for his work with two groups, the Colorado Hillbillies (with his brother Walt) and his own spin-off group, the Rhythm Rangers. The Shrum brothers broadened their exposure to an entire nation of fans after an appearance in the 1938 Gene Autry film, The Old Barn Dance. Cal went on to appear in another eight films through 1949, including Swing, Cowboy, Swing (which he produced as well as starred in). Shrum, who had a popular hit with "Heaven Bound Train", a tribute to Hank Williams, also launched the careers of a number of country stars, including Tex Williams, before he became a radio performer in Springfield, Illinois in the 1960s. Corners slightly worn and creased. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
