Photograph signed: "Slim Whitman". B/w, 3½x5½ overall, image
3¼x4¾ (one surface). The talents of country singer/songwriter Otis Dewey
Whitman, Jr. (1924-2013) were discovered by Col. Tom Parker, later famed as
Elvis Presley's manager. He released his first single in 1948, under the name of
Slim Whitman. Whitman's biggest hits, including "Indian Love Call," and "Rose
Marie," came in the 1950s, but his career had a rebirth in 1979 through the
hugely successful telemarketing of his Just For You album of greatest
hits. Avoiding the "down on my luck" lyrics of so many country singers, Whitman
fused country and crooner styles in an approach dubbed "countrypolitan."
Whitman's yodeling of "Indian Love Call" is the weapon which defeats the
Martian invaders in the 1996 movie spoof, Mars Attacks. Fine
condition.
