8½x11. No place, 1969 November 19. On stationery imprinted with his name to actor Eddie
Albert, Pacific Palisades, California. Begins: "Dear Eddie". In full: "Many young
Californians have responded to the enclosed ad [not present] by volunteering to get
signatures on the INVOLVE petitions. The movement, as the ad indicates, has
enthusiastic, bi-partisan support. What it needs now is enthusiastic financial support.
There are many serious, responsible young people anxious to be involved in the affairs of
their state and nation. The gift of your name and loot would be of immense help! Many
of us have given verbal support on this issue for sometime. Now is the time to put our
money where our mouth is and help. Won't you please cut out the attached coupon [not
present] and send your check today, payable to INVOLVE, F. A. Heim, Treasurer?
Peace...." In the year he signed this letter, Smothers appeared on an episode of TV's,
Love, American Style. TOM SMOTHERS (1937-2023) and his younger brother, DICK
SMOTHERS (born in 1939), first appeared professionally at the Purple Onion in San
Francisco in 1959, and they made their first national television appearance on The Jack Paar
Show in 1961. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hourwas televised on CBS from 1967
until, after numerous censorship battles, they were cancelled in 1969. They revived the show
in 1988, and the new version of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour ran until 1989. Tom and
Dick have appeared, both together and separately, in feature films and made-for-TV movies
and made guest starring appearances on TV series. Tom has appeared on multiple
episodes of such TV series as Love, American Style, The Love Boat and Suddenly Susan. The
Smothers Brothers, who hold the record for longevity for a comedy duo, still tour across the
nation. Best known for his role as city slicker turned farmer Oliver Douglas on TV's
Green Acres (1965-1971) with Eva Gabor as his wife, EDDIE ALBERT (1906-2005) had
made his movie debut in Brother Rat in 1938; his costars included Ronald Reagan and Jane
Wyman. Nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1953 (Roman Holiday) and 1972 (The
Heartbreak Kid), Albert's film career included Airport '79, Escape to Witch Mountain, The
Longest Yard, Captain Newman, M.D., The Longest Day, The Sun Also Rises, The Teahouse
of the August Moon, Oklahoma!, You're in the Navy Now and Hit Parade of 1947. Worthy of
further research. Lightly creased with folds, light horizontal fold through signature. Slightly soiled
left blank margin. Fine condition.
