SOL BLOOM
Congressman Sol Bloom answers letter from a constituent
Typed Letter Signed: "Sol Bloom". 1p. 8x10¼, Congress of the United States letterhead. New York, New York, 1930 November 3. To: Mr. Wm. G. Watters, New York. In full: "My dear Mr. Watters: Received your letter of October 30th, which I have read with much interest. I expect to return to Washington immediately after Election, when I will be pleased to look into this and be assured of my earnest consideration and attention to the subject matter, Faithfull yours," William G. Watters ran two companies in New York at the time of this letter-Hospital Supply Co. and Watters Laboratories Consolidated. Sol Bloom (1870-1949) was a Representative from New York (1923-1949). He began his business life in California as a theater manager and promoted boxing matches. Traveling to Paris to attend the Exposition Universelle (1889), he was impressed with the spectacular shows. He returned to Chicago and developed the Midway Palisance for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893-he was 23 at the time. The success of the Midway resulted in the term being introduced to American English. Chicago's political machine took notice and he was soon a manger of M. Witmark & Sons, the largest sheet music publisher in the U.S. By 1897, he was publishing under his own name and was known as "Sol Bloom the Music Man". He was awarded the first musical copyright of the 20th century and moved to New York in 1903, dabbled in real estate and switched his political loyalty to New York's Tammany Hall. Bloom won his first election to the House of Representatives by 145 votes. While in Washington, he was in charge of the George Washington Bicentennial (1932), and was the delegate to the convention to establish the United Nations. He was the US representative to the first meeting of the UN General Assembly in London 1946. Normal mailing folds. Creased and toned.
