Signatures: "Sol Smith Russell/December 29th 1900" and on verso "W. A. Peffer/Kansas", 6½x2. Actor and comedian SOL SMITH RUSSELL (1848-1902) was a drummer boy in the Union Army during the Civil War. After leaving the army, he performed in theatrical and musical acts in the Midwest before make his New York stage debut in 1871. He later starred in his own theater company and enjoyed great popularity. His talent for character impersonation was showcased in Edgewood Folks (1880), a play written expressly for him by J. E. Brown. WILLIAM A. PEFFER (1831-1912) joined the California gold rush, and then served as a Union Army lieutenant in the Civil War. Moving to Kansas, he practiced law and published newspapers. The Kansas legislature elected him to one term in the US Senate (1891-1897), where he became one of 6 People's Party ("Populist") members to sit in that body. Defeated for re-election by William Harris, he became the only Populist Senator succeeded by another Populist. Irregularly cut. Heavily toned. Fine condition.
