Signature: "Sol Smith Russell/1896", 5¼x2¾ slip. Newspaper column and illustration of Russell (b/w, 1½x3 overall, image 1½x2, one surface) affixed below signature. Actor and comedian Sol Smith Russell (1848-1902) was a drummer boy in the Union Army during the Civil War. After leaving the army, he performed in theatrical and musical acts in the Midwest before make his New York stage debut in 1871. He later starred in his own theater company and enjoyed great popularity. Signature is in landscape orientation, newspaper clipping in portrait orientation. Fine condition.
