Autograph Quotation signed: "Sol Smith Russell/1886", 4¼x3½ card. He has written a quote from Shakespeare's Macbeth: "The poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more." Actor and comedian Sol Smith Russell (1848-1902) was a drummer boy in the Union Army during the Civil War. After leaving the army, he performed in theatrical and musical acts in the Midwest before make his New York stage debut in 1871. He later starred in his own theater company and enjoyed great popularity. Soiled at top and right edges, touching one word of text. Otherwise, fine condition.
