SOLOMON J. SOLOMON
Letter signed by the classical painter who pioneered the use of camouflage by the British army
Autograph Letter signed: "Solomon J. Solomon," 1p, 4½x7. St. John's Wood Studios, N.W., 1898 April 16. To Miss Schloesser. In full: "I shall be very flattered to have my autograph added to your collection. With kind regards to all your good people." English painter SOLOMON J. SOLOMON (1860-1927) was a prominent portrait painter whose subjects included Kings Edward VII and George V. He was also in demand as a book illustrator. However, Solomon's passion was for large scale canvas paintings of Biblical and mythological scenes. His Samson (1887) is especially well known. Despite his age, Solomon enlisted as a private in the Home Guard during World War I, and successfully proposed many ideas for camouflage, including concealment for observation and sniper nests, and even netting to conceal tanks and units. In 1919, he became President of the Society of British Artists. Transference of letterhead from being folded touches the middle initial and last name, else fine.
