SPACE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS: STS-30 MISSION
Commemorative Envelope signed by all five crew members: Walker, Grabe, Thagard, Cleave, Lee, and by fellow astronaut James van Hoften
Inscribed Commemorative Envelope signed: "Mark Lee", "Dave/Walker", "Ron Grabe", "Norm Thagard", "Ox van Hoften", "M Cleave", 6½x3½. Envelope postmarked Kennedy Space Center, May 4, 1989. Space shuttle mission STS-30, the 29th orbital flight and the fourth flight of Atlantis, was launched from Cape Canaveral's Kennedy Space Center on May 4, 1989 and returned to Edwards Air Force Base on May 8. Atlantis deployed the unmanned, Venus-bound Magellan spacecraft, the first interplanetary probe launched from a shuttle. (Magellan would begin orbiting Venus in August 1990, and sending back much new information on the planet's gravity and geology, and particularly its intense volcanic activity.) The crew was composed of Commander DAVID M. WALKER; Pilot RONALD J. GRABE.; AND Mission Specialists NORMAN E. THAGARD, MARY L. CLEAVE and MARK C. LEE. It was the first spaceflight for Lee, the second for Walker, Grabe and Cleave, and the third for Thagard. JAMES "OX" VAN HOFTEN, not a member of the STS-30 crew but the veteran of previous shuttle missions in 1984 and 1985, has also signed. Fine condition.
