Space shuttle mission STS-61, the 22nd shuttle mission and the ninth for Challenger, was launched the Kennedy Space Center on October 30, 1985, and returned Edwards Air Force Base on November 6. This was a Spacelab mission, with microgravity scientific projects directed from the German Space Operations Center at Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich. Challenger also deployed a GLOMAR message relay satellite. HENRY W. HARTSFIELD, JR. was mission Commander, STEVEN R. NAGEL the Pilot. The Mission Specialists were BONNIE J. DUNBAR, JAMES F. BUCHLI and GUION S. BLUFORD. The Payload Specialists, one German, one Austrian, and one Dutch, were REINHARD FURRER, ERNST MESSERSCHMID and WUBBO OCKELS. It was the first flight for Dunbar, and the only one for the three Europeans. This was the largest crew aboard any single spacecraft for the entire period from launch to landing. "Bluford" signature lightly beaded but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
