SPACE SHUTTLE CHALLENGER: STS-7 MISSION
Commemorative Envelope signed by all five crew members: Crippen, Hauck, Fabian, Ride and Thagard
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Norman Thagard", "Sally Ride", "John Fabian", "Rich Hauck", "Bob Crippen", 6½x3½. Envelope postmarked Kennedy Space Center, June 18, 1983. Space shuttle mission STS-7, the seventh orbital flight and the second of 10 flights by Challenger, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on June 18, 1983, landing June 24 at Edwards Air Force Base. The first American spaceflight to carry a female astronaut, STS-7 deployed communication satellites and other scientific payloads. The mission Commander was ROBERT CRIPPEN (b. 1937), the pilot of the shuttle's first orbital test flight (STS-1), would go into space three more times during 1983 and 1984. After leaving NASA, he became President of Thiokol, which makes rocket engines. FREDERICK "RICK" HAUCK (b. 1941), the pilot, would go into space two more times as mission commander in 1984 and 1988, including the first "return to space" flight after the loss of Challenger. He was one of NASA's lead investigators into the Challenger disaster; Mission Specialist 1 JOHN FABIAN (b. 1939), who had flown combat missions for the US Air Force in Vietnam, was making the first of his two space flights, the second coming in 1985 Mission Specialist 2 SALLY K. RIDE. (1951-2012), the first American woman in space, was making the first of her two orbital flights. She now heads Sally Ride Science, a science education program for young people. Mission Specialist 3 NORMAN THAGARD (b. 1943) would return to space three more times on shuttle flights, and the become in 1995 the first American to go into space on a Russian vehicle (Soyuz TM-21 to the Mir space station). So Thagard can be called the first US cosmonaut. Challenger disintegrated shortly after take-off on what would have been its tenth flight, with the loss of all seven crew members, on January 28, 1986. Fine condition.
