Approach and Landing tests of the prototype space shuttle Enterprise in 1977, Joe Engle and
Richard Truly took the shuttle Columbia on its second orbital flight, November 12-13, 1981.
RICHARD H. TRULY (1937-2024) was among the first military astronauts selected in 1965
and became a NASA astronaut in 1969. In 1983, he served as commander of STS-8,
successfully completing the first night launch and landing. Retired Vice Admiral Truly
served as the eighth Administrator of NASA (1989-1992) and was the first former
astronaut to do so. JOE H. ENGLE (1932-2024) became a NASA astronaut in 1966,
tested the X-15, flew the STS-2, STS-51-I and was a member of the Society of Experimental
Test Pilots. Over the course of his career he flew more than 155 types of aircraft. Engle is the
only human being to have flown two different types of winged vehicles in space (X-15
& Space Shuttle) and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2001. Edges
