postmarked Kennedy Space Center, August 8, 1989. Space shuttle mission
STS-28, the 30th orbital flight and thefourth flight of Columbia,
was launched the Kennedy Space Center on August 8, 1989, and returned to Edwards
Air Force Base on August 13. This Defense Department mission - the fourth
DOD-dedicated mission - carried a classified payload, believed to include
two communication satellites, and even a classified altitude. The flight also
carried a human skull rigged to measure radiation dosages penetrating the
cranium during travel in space. BREWSTER H. SHAW, JR., making his third
spaceflight, commanded the mission. RICHARD N. RICHARDS was the pilot.
Mission Specialists JAMES C. ADAMSON, DAVID C. LEESTMA (second
spaceflight) and MARK N. BROWN completed the crew. Unknown stain at
"Richards" signature (legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
