Space shuttle mission STS-5, the fifth orbital flight and the fifth flight of Columbia, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on November 11, 1982, landing November 16 at Edwards Air Force Base. This was the first shuttle mission to place communications satellites in geosynchronous orbit. The mission Commander was VANCE BRAND (b.1931), already a veteran (command module pilot of the first joint US-Soviet space flight (1975). Brand would make two more shuttle flights after this one. ROBERT OVERMEYER (1936-1996), the pilot, would go into space again as commander of the STS-51 "Spacelab 3" mission. He was one of NASA's lead investigators into the Challenger disaster; Mission Specialist 2 JOSEPH ALLEN (b.1937) would return to space on the second flight of the Orbiter Discovery (1984). Mission Specialist 1 WILLIAM LENOIR. (1939-2010) would never return to space, but worked in administration for NASA and several private firms. Having survived the journey into space, he died in a bicycle accident. Columbia, the first space shuttle to go into orbit, performed 27 missions before disintegrating during re-entry on February 1, 2003, with the loss of all seven crew members. Fine condition.
