Space shuttle mission STS-65, aboard Columbia, launched from the Kennedy
Space Center on July 8, 1993 and returned to the same site on July 23. This
mission conducted the second in a series of microgravity experiments sponsored
by the European Space Agency, and the space agencies of Japan, Canada, German
and France, as well as NASA. Newts and jellyfish were used to study embryonic
development in microgravity. The crew included Commander ROBERT CABANA;
Pilot JAMES D. HALSELL; and Mission Specialists RICHARD HIEB, LEROY
CHIAO, DONALD THOMAS, CARL E. WALZ and CHIAKI MUKAI. Mukai was the first
Japanese woman in space. Fine condition.
