Commemorative Envelope signed: "Ken Mattingly", "Loren Shriver", "Ellison Onizuka", "James Buchli", "Gary Payton", 6½x3½. Envelope postmarked Kennedy Space Center, January 24, 1985. Space shuttle mission STS-51C, the fifteenth orbital flight and the third flight of Discovery, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center on January 24, 1985 and landed at the same site on January 27. The first of nine shuttle flights in 1985 and the 100th human spaceflight to achieve orbit, deployed a classified military payload. The five-person flight crew consisted of THOMAS K. "KEN" MATTINGLY, commander, making his third space flight, including Command Module Pilot of Apollo 16. Pilot LOREN SHRIVER would be mission commander on two later flights, including the 1990 deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope. Mission Specialist JAMES BUCHLI was making the first of four spaceflights. GARY PAYTON was making his only journey into space, but the aeronautical engineer was destined to become Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for Space Programs. ELLISON ONIZUKI would lose his life on his next space mission, the post-launch explosion of the Challenger just one year after his successful mission on Discovery. Fine condition.
