SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOR: STS-49 MISSION
Commemorative Envelope of Endeavor's maiden flight, signed by all seven crew members: Brandenstein, Chilton, Akers, Hieb, Melnick, Thornton and Thuot
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Dan Brandenstein", "Kevin Chilton", "T Akers", "Rick Hieb", "Bruce Melnick", "Kathy Thornton", "Pierre Thuot", 6½x3½. Envelope postmarked Kennedy Space Center, May 7, 1992. Space shuttle mission STS-49, the 47th orbital flight and the first flight of Endeavor, was launched from Kennedy Space Center on May 7, 1992 and returned to Edwards Air Force Base on May 16, the first use of a drag chute on landing. Endeavor retrieved an Intesat VI satellite, attached it to a new upper stage, and re-launched it into a corrected orbit. The flight was notable for its spacewalk records: the first 3-person EVA (Thuot, Hieb and Akers), the longest EVA to date (8 hours, 29 minutes), the most EVAs (4) and the most total human hours spent on EVAs (nearly 60). The crew was composed of Commander DANIEL BRANDENSTEIN; Pilot KEVIN CHILTON; Mission Specialists THOMAS AKERS, RICHARD HIEB, BRUCE MELNICK, KATHRYN THORNTON and PIERRE THUOT. Fine condition.
