SPACE SHUTTLE CREW: RICHARD TRULY AND JOE ENGLE
Inscribed and signed NASA color photo of the Enterprise shuttle test vehicle, flown by Truly and Engle in 1977, bearing Shuttle stamps cancelled during their later orbital flight aboard Columbia (1981).
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Best wishes to Jurg/Richard Truly", "Joe Engle". Color, 10x8. Official NASA photo with printed caption, showing astronauts Truly and Engle with the shuttle test vehicle Enterprise. Affixed are four Space Shuttle stamps, postmarked Kennedy Space Center, Houston (two), and Edwards Air Force Base, November 12-13, 1981. In 1977, RICHARD TRULY (1937-2024) and JOE ENGLE (1932-2024) conducted Approach and Landing tests aboard the prototype orbital vehicle ("space shuttle") Enterprise, which was not equipped to fly in space. They alternated with a second crew, composed of Fred Haise (of Apollo 13 fame) and Gordon Fullerton. In November 1981, Truly and Engle conducted the second orbital flight of a space shuttle aboard Columbia. Later Truly commanded the shuttle's first nighttime launch and landing (STS-8). Retired as a Vice Admiral, he was chief administrator of NASA from 1989 to 1992, the first former astronaut to head the agency. Engle, a former X-15 test pilot, went into space again on STS-51. Engle, the only human being to have flown two different types of winged vehicles in space (X-15 & Space Shuttle), was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2001. Edges toned. Multiple ink stamps and stamps. Printed caption on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
