SPADE COOLEY
He signs the AFTRA application form (1955) for a guest appearing on his TV show.
Document signed: "Spade Cooley", 2 pages, 6½x9 (front and verso). Hollywood, California, 1955 August 12. Membership application for the American Federation of Television and Radio Actors, Los Angeles local. Cooley signs the application on behalf of Nelida Chap, who was appearing on his how as a special act. Accompanied by carbon copy of Chap's payment of the initiation fee. Spade Cooley (1910-1969) was a fiddler who led a pop-oriented country music band. His show brought large crowds to the Venice Pier Ballroom, playing what he was the first to describe as "Western swing." He had a string of six Top Ten hits on the country music charts, beginning with a #1 hit, Shame on You (1944). Cooley appeared in small roles in 38 Western movies, occasionally as a stand-in for Roy Rogers. He hosted a popular music show in TV syndication, The Hoffmann Hayride from 1949 to 1959. In 1961, Cooley was convicted of murdering his wife, Ella Mae Evans, who was seeking a divorce. He spent the rest of his life in prison, dying after performing on furlough a benefit concert for the Deputy Sheriff's Association. He has figured in several novels, and a biopic is reportedly in the works. Staple at upper left corner. Lightly toned and creased at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
