Price: $90.00
SPARKY ANDERSON
Topps baseball card issued after his first and only year as a
player.
Baseball Card signed: "Sparky Anderson", 3½x2½. 1960 Topps
card (#34) for "George Anderson/Philadelphia Phillies Second Base". On
verso is Anderson's 1959 Major League Batting Record: 152 Games, 477 At Bats, 42
Runs, 104 Hits, 9 Doubles, 3 Triples, 0 Home Runs, 34 RBIs, .218 Batting
Average. Anderson (1934-2010) played for the Philadelphia Phillies his first and
only year in the majors. In 2000, George "Sparky" Anderson was inducted into
the Baseball Hall of Fame, obviously not for his record as a player.
Sparky Anderson managed the Cincinnati Reds from 1970-1978 winning five
Western Division and four National League Championships and two World Series.
As manager of the Detroit Tigers (1980-1992), Anderson won two Eastern
Division Championships and one World Series. Despite compiling the sixth most
wins (2,194) of any manager in history, Anderson was pushed into retirement
after he refused to manage replacement players during the 1994 baseball strike.
(He wasn't siding with the striking players; he just wouldn't offer the fans an
inferior product.) Tips of corners slightly worn. Fine condition.
