SPARKY ANDERSON
HOF manager signed his Reds team card photo
Baseball Card signed: "Sparky Anderson", 3½x2½. Cincinnati
Reds team picture, with small inset photo of Anderson. Player checklist for card
collectors on verso. © 1975 Topps Chewing Gum. In 1959 Anderson (1934-2010)
played for the Philadelphia Phillies. It was his first and only year in the
majors. In 2000, George "Sparky" Anderson was inducted into the Baseball Hall
of Fame, obviously not for his record as a player. Sparky Anderson
managed the Cincinnati Reds from 1970-1978 winning five Western Division and
four National League Championships and two World Series. As manager of the
Detroit Tigers (1980-1992), Anderson won two Eastern Division Championships
and one World Series. Despite compiling the sixth most wins (2,194) of any
manager in history, Anderson was pushed into retirement after he refused to
manage replacement players during the 1994 baseball strike. (He wasn't siding
with the striking players; he just wouldn't offer the fans an inferior product.)
Worn at corners. Boxes next to player names on verso have been neatly filled in
with pencil. Overall, fine condition.
