SPENCER WILLIAMS, JR. Signed b/w 8x10 publicity photograph of the film director and actor as "Andy" of the popular show Amos 'n' Andy. Extremely rare! Inscribed Photograph Signed: "To: Sue/From: 'Andy'/'Hel-l-o-o-o!'/Spencer Williams Jr./'Andy' - Amos N Andy, TV". Actual image 7½x9¼ with white border (one surface). Actor, director, producer, and writer Spencer "Andy" Williams, Jr. (1893-1969) is best known for playing Andrew Hogg "Andy" Brown in the TV series, Amos 'n' Andy (1951-1953). Williams, who had come out of retirement to play the part, had last been seen in 1947's Beale Street Mama, which he directed as well as appeared in. Williams, who made his film debut in 1928 in Tenderfoot, appeared in a long list of feature films, most notably The Blood of Jesus (also known as The Glory Road) in 1941. Williams wrote, directed and produced the film, which was selected to become part of the Library of Congress' National Registry of Films, and he also wrote and directed several other features, including Son of Ingagi (1940), Marching On! (1943) and Of One Blood (1944). Williams is considered the second African-American feature film director ever, creating race films that were meant for African-American audiences in segregated theaters. Some of his productions have been lost, most notably Brother Martin: Servant of Jesus. Bottom right corner creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
