SPIC & SPAN (EDITH 'BABY EDWARDS' HUNT and WILLIE
JOSEPH)
Signed photo of the tap dance team, signed in Montreal in
1950
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/Elenore Bowers/In every life
there's/a favorite./Therefore, we have found/not one with greater talent/and
such a pleasing personality./Dancingly,/Spic & Span/Esquire
Club/Montreal/Canada/6-26-50",by Edith. B/w, 8x10 overall, image
7½x8¾, one surface. In the early 1920s, EDITH "BABY EDWARDS" HUNT
(1922-2000) and WILLIE JOSEPH formed the tap dance team of Spic &
Span, performing together until Hunt returned to her native Philadelphia in the
early 1960s to care for her ailing mother. Learning details of Willie Joseph's
life would require further research, but Edith "Baby Edwards" Hunt is a tap
dance legend. She began performing in amateur shows at the age of 3, and was
the first African-American cast member of TV's Horn & Hardart's Kiddie
Hour. She appeared on Broadway in Swingin' That Dream (1939).
After returning to Philadelphia, she taught dance, performed locally as a
jazz singer, and continued tap dancing. She was still doing flips and splits in
her seventies. One member of Spic & Span appears to have written the
inscription here, and the other to have signed it in their stage name, but we
haven't determined who wrote each portion. Lightly creased and toned at all
edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
