"SPIDER" JORGENSEN
On their first day in the Major Leagues, Jackie Robinson loaned him a glove.
Baseball Bat signed: "'Spider' Jorgensen/Brooklyn Dodgers 1947-'50". Wooden Adirondack Personal Model bat, signed on the barrel. John "Spider" Jorgensen (1919-2003) spent five seasons in the National League with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1947-1950) and New York Giants (1950-1951). He was the Dodgers' regular third baseman in his rookie season, and Jorgensen appeared on his way to a fine baseball career, but he injured his arm in the off-season and was never again an everyday player in the Majors again. However, he continued to play outfield and third base for Oakland of the Pacific Coast League in the 1950s, and Jorgensen scouted for the Cubs up until the day he entered the hospital for the last time. Jorgensen, who had played with Jackie Robinson on the Dodgers' AAA farm club, the Montreal Royals, made his Major League debut on the same day as Robinson, April 15, 1947. Unlike Robinson, Jorgensen was expecting to go back to the minor leagues, but two Dodger infielders were hurt, so he was told to suit up for the game. Jorgensen, however, had already sent his bats and gloves off on the train, so Robinson, who played first base that day, loaned his second baseman's mitt to Spider. Fine condition.
