Album leaf signed on opposite sides, with Stainless Stephen adding a
self-caricature
Self-Caricature signed: "Stainless Stephen", 6x4. He has
drawn himself with his trademark bowler hat. Also signed on verso: "Lily
Morris". STAINLESS STEPHEN was the stage name of Arthur Clifford Baynes
(1892-1971), an English music hall and radio comedian. Dressed in a tux,
bowler hat and rotating bow tie with a stainless steel vest and hatband, he
verbalized the punctuation in his sentences as he said his lines. He appeared in
a few films BBC listeners voted him the most popular entertainer of 1931.
In his youth, he was a medal-winning bike racer. LILY MORRIS (1882-1952)
was an English music hall star who was also heard on radio, and
played character roles in films of the 1930s. She popularized such
ditties as "Don't Have Any More, Missus Moore" and "Why Am I Always a
Bridesmaid?" She also toured the Continent, and performed at the Palace in New
York in 1928. Lightly creased at corners and edges, slightly soiled. Edges worn.
