STANFORD WHITE. Typed Letter signed: "Stanford White", 1p, 7¾x10¼. New York, N.Y., 1899 September 3. On letterhead of McKim, Mead & White, Architects to Mr. H. W. Fay. In full: "Under the circumstances, I suppose it will be necessary for you to write Mrs. E. E. Richardson, Brookline, Mass., for an order on Mr. Cox for Mr. Richardson's photograph. I herewith enclose you an order on Mr. Cox, for my photograph if you care for it. Yours truly". Gifted architect White (1853-1906) designed many structures in New York City such as Washington Arch, Players Club and the second Madison Square Garden, as well as Trinity Church in Boston. He was married to Bessie Smith of the family that founded Smithtown, Long Island, so Ethelbert M. Smith may be a relative. White was shot and killed by millionaire Harry Thaw, jealous about White's love affair with his wife, Evelyn Nesbit Thaw. This lurid tale, headline news in its time, was recounted in the 1955 film, The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing. Slightly toned and soiled. Light horizontal and vertical folds, one of latter crossing "f" in signature. Overall, fine condition.
