CONFEDERATE CURRENCY (NORTH CAROLINA, CO-SIGNED BY: R.G. LINDSAY)
The seceding state's Public Treasurer signs a 50-cent bill.
Currency signed: "R. G. Lindsay" as Public Treasurer, 5x2¾. Raleigh, North Carolina, 1862 September 1. Printed State of North Carolina Treasury note no. 1274, 50-cent denomination, payable to the bearer at the Treasury on or before 1866 January 1. Vignette of a sailing ship in center. Printed by J. T. Patterson and Co., Augusta, Georgia. Resolution No. 34 of the North Carolina in its first post-secession session, May/June 1861, authorized the Public Treasurer to issue notes in denominations as low as 10, 25 and 50 cents, the first currency issued by the state since the 18th century. Although North Carolina's legislature authorized only $16 million in treasury notes, a small sum compared to the very large issues by the Confederate national government, the value of the state's currency declined as the Union blockade tightened and Confederate military fortunes declined. Lightly creased and soiled. Overall, fine condition.
