STEPHEN A. DOUGLAS
Debated Lincoln and defeated the future President in a Senate race.
Signature: "S.A. Douglas", 3½x1 mounted on 4¾x1¾ sheet. Douglas (1813-1861) served Illinois as Representative in Congress from 1843-1847 and U.S. Senator from 1847 until his death on June 3, 1861. He defeated Abraham Lincoln for the U.S. Senate in 1858 (Lincoln-Douglas debates) but was defeated by Lincoln for the presidency in 1860, receiving 12 electoral votes. After the election, Douglas became a staunch supporter of Lincoln's war policies. Signature page shows light glue stains, one just touches the "A". Lightly toned at edges. Left edge has two small holes from previous binding. Otherwise, fine condition.
