STEPHEN B. ELKINS
As New Mexico's Territorial Delegate in Congress, he asks that his monthly draft be sent to him in Lexington, Missouri.
Autograph Letter signed: "S B Elkins", 1 page, 5x8. Santa Fe, 1874 October 12. To "General Ordway", in full: "I beg you will send my October draft to me at Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri. If not too much trouble I would be obliged if you send the draft in time to reach me there by the 5th or 6th of November. Very truly". Stephen B. Elkins (1841-1911) was a Delegate to Congress from the Territory of New Mexico from 1873-1877, he moved to West Virginia where he founded Elkins, West Virginia in 1890. He was Benjamin Harrison's Secretary of War from 1891-1893 and U.S. Senator from 1895 until his death in 1911. "General Ordway" was probably Brigadier General Albert Ordway (1840-1897), commander of a "colored" regiment during the Civil War who alternated between private business interests and government employment in the postwar years. Fold down center. Lightly soiled. Right edge frayed. Light surface creases. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
