STEPHEN B. ELKINS
As New Mexico's Territorial Delegate in Congress, he asks that his monthly draft be sent to him in Lexington, Missouri.
Autograph Letter signed: "S B Elkins", 1 page, 5x8. Santa Fe, 1874 October 12. To "General Ordway", in full: "I beg you will send my October draft to me at Lexington, Lafayette County, Missouri. If not too much trouble I would be obliged if you send the draft in time to reach me there by the 5th or 6th of November. Very truly". Stephen B. Elkins (1841-1911) was a Delegate to Congress from the Territory of New Mexico from 1873-1877, he moved to West Virginia where he founded Elkins, West Virginia in 1890. He was Benjamin Harrison's Secretary of War from 1891-1893 and U.S. Senator from 1895 until his death in 1911. "General Ordway" was probably Brigadier General Albert Ordway (1840-1897), commander of a "colored" regiment during the Civil War who alternated between private business interests and government employment in the postwar years.
