Signature: “Stephen Graham” in black ink. 3x1½. Stephen Graham (1884-1975)
was a writer and journalist whose explorations throughout pre-revolution
Russia and Jerusalem and his subsequent publications gained him fame. In the
early 1900s Graham was hired by The Times to write from Russia. He spent
over a decade in the Eastern European nation, returning to Britain in 1917 to
enlist in the Scots Guards. Many of his publications reflect on his personal
experiences in foreign nations or on the Western Front, such as in A Private in
the Guards (1919). Other notable works include Peter the Great: A Life of
Peter I of Russia Called the Great (1929) and With the Russian Pilgrims to
Jerusalem (1913). Light markings in pencil on verso. Light smudging and
toning. Otherwise, fine condition.
