STEPHEN LEACOCK
Stephen Leacock writes a letter about a book on the Art of writing.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Stephen Leacock", 3p, folded to 4¼x7, black bordered paper. Mc Gill (University, Montreal, Canada), 1926 March 6. To "My dear [illegible] Stephen". In full: "I've just been looking through your book on the Art of writing. It seems to me a most useful item for college work, - even without my contribution list. And with it, it is priceless. I don't agree with yr friend Ian Hay at all.*". Beneath his signature, Leacock has added: "* I mean that when [illegible] - Ian Hay I or Shakespeare, - writes his best he writes 'easiest.' Try your English Ian on easiest as an adverb." British-born Canadian educator and humorist Stephen Butler Leacock (1869-1944), who wrote essays, parodies and short stories, is perhaps best known for his masterpiece, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (1912). Leacock's other works also include Literary Lapses (1910), Nonsense Novels (1911) and Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914) as well as biographies on Samuel L. Clemens (1932) and Charles Dickens (1933). Heavily penned with ink transference from being folded. Paper clip rust stains at upper right margin of first page show through to signature page and integral leaf, touching 2 words. Slightly soiled, black border worn. Overall, fine condition.
