Stephen Leacock writes a letter asking the recipient to send him a book that he has left behind by accident.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Stephen Leacock", 1p, 8½x11. Montreal, no date but 1931 February 25. On letterhead of McGill University, Department of Economics and Political Science, to "My dear Mrs Wainwright". In full: "In the agitation of my departure on Saturday, I left the Bishop behind me as no doubt you noticed: not through want of interest in him but through superior interest in the goodbye. If you care to send him on I should value it very greatly. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed my visit & how much I appreciated your hospitality, and I am so pleased to think that our meeting was such a success With kindest regards to yourself and to the doctor: & when you write, IS Miss Ruth." Accompanied by original envelope, 6x3½, 2-cent Canadian stamp affixed, postmarked Montreal, February 25, 1931. Addressed by Leacock to: "Mrs Wainwright, 912 Clay Avenue, Scranton Pa." Lightly creased and soiled. Ink smudged at 1 word of writing. Torn open at upper edge. Overall, fine condition. British-born Canadian educator and humorist Stephen Butler Leacock (1869-1944), who wrote essays, parodies and short stories, is perhaps best known for his masterpiece, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (1912). Leacock's other works also include Literary Lapses (1910), Nonsense Novels (1911) and Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914) as well as biographies on Samuel L. Clemens (1932) and Charles Dickens (1933). Two items.
