Autograph Letter signed: "Stephen Leacock", 3p, 5½x8¾. Toronto, Ontario, 1923 May 18. To "Dear Mrs. Wainwright". In full: "The enclosed very brief note was dictated by Stevie. As is usual with children he rather [illegible] in attempting the very note this letter finds curt in the theme. He never carefully good understanding the books he is really more gradual than his brief talent implies. This is written from somewhere at Lathene Very sincerely." Slightly soiled and torn at creases. Otherwise, fine condition. Dictaetd letter: "DICATTED Dear Mrs. Wainwright Thank you so much for your two books you sent me. I enjoyed them very much. Your affectionate Steve" Fold creases. Fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope addressed in his hand to "Mrs. Wainwright, c/o Dr. Wainwright, 915 912 Clay Ave, Scranton, Pa.". Postmarked Toronto, Ontario, May 18, 1923. Lightly soiled.British-born Canadian educator and humorist Stephen Butler Leacock (1869-1944) chaired the Department of Economics and Political Science at McGill University for 30 years. His early writings were in those disciplines. However, he won greater success as a humorist noted for his essays, parodies and short stories. His best known works include his masterpiece Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town (1912), Literary Lapses (1910), Nonsense Novels (1911) and Arcadian Adventures with the Idle Rich (1914). He wrote biographies of Samuel L. Clemens (1932) and Charles Dickens (1933). McGill's only child, Stephen L. Leacock, was born in 1915. His wife Trix had died in 1925. Four items.
