his work, beginning with his 1933 volume, Poems. His other works
include essays, a novel, The Temple (begun in 1929 but not
published until 1988), and his autobiography, World within World
(1951). Spender was also a co-founder and editor (1939-1941) of "Horizon"
magazine, and he also edited "Encounter" (1953-1966). He occupied the
Elliston Chair of Poetry at the University of Cincinnati (1954) and was
Professor of Rhetoric at Gresham College (1961) and Professor of
English at University College (1970-1977), London. Spender, who had
generated controversy over his sexuality (he eventually married concert pianist
Natasha Litvin in 1941), was made CBE in 1962 and knighted in
1983. Lightly creased and soiled. Chipped at edges and lower left corner, right
