The Press Secretary for President Roosevelt writes to a friend,
thanking him for a lovely holiday gift to him and his family, saying that it
even made the "Old Man" happy
Typed letter signed: "Steve", in blue ink, 6¼x9¼. December 28,
1935. The White House. Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Walter: This is
just a note of thanks, by way of telling you how grateful the Earlys are. They
all, Helen, Buddy, Virginia and Tommy had a grand Christmas and so did the Old
Man, thanks to you. And we wish you all success and happiness through
[19]'36 and, on and on. Very sincerely". Stephen T. Early
(1889-1951) was Secretary to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from
1933 to 1945, staying with Roosevelt throughout his entire presidency. After
1945, he took a brief retirement from government work to become Vice
President of Pullman, Inc., returning in 1949 to serve as Under Secretary
(later Deputy Secretary of Defense). In 1950, he served as Press
Secretary to President Truman, filling in after the sudden death of the
previous Press Secretary. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Toned.
Corners lightly worn and creased, esp. bottom right corner. Pencil notes
(unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
