STEVE BLASS
Baseball signed by the All-Star Pirate pitcher who gave the name to Steve Blass Disease
Baseball signed "Steve Blass" in purple ink in the sweet-spot. 2½-inch diameter. Rawlings Official Major League Baseball with Allan H. ("Bud") Selig facsimile signature. Blass, born in 1942 in Caanan, Connecticut, was a Major League Baseball pitcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1964 to 1974. An All-Star in 1972, Blass helped the Pirates win the World Series in 1971 with two complete game wins. Blass has a career ERA of 3.63 with a record of 103-76, 896 strikeouts and 16 shutouts. He had the best win-loss percentage of any National League Pitcher in 1968 and led the National League in shutouts in 1971 with five, adding to his career total of 16 shutouts. Blass is also noteworthy for his inexplicable loss of control in 1973; his ERA soared from 2.49 in 1972, his second-lowest seasonal ERA, to 9.85 in 1973 and 9.00 in 1974, the year he retired. Such an inexplicable and sudden loss of talent has ever since been called Steve Blass Disease. He was a broadcaster for the Pirates from 1983 to 2007. Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition.
