STEVE GARVEY
This signed form gave Topps permission to print the first baseman's photographs on
their baseball cards
Partly Printed DS: "Steve Garvey", 1p, 8½x11. Brooklyn, N.Y., 1987 March 11. Extension
Agreement between Topps Chewing Gum Inc. and Garvey for three additional baseball
seasons at $75.00 per year, giving Topps "the right to publish my baseball picture" through
1990. Garvey played first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1969-1982) and San Diego
Padres (1983-1987), retiring after the 1987 season. The most durable player of his era, Steve
Garvey (b. 1948) played in 1,207 consecutive games while in the MLB. He exploded as an
N.L. star in 1974 after being selected to All-Star team as a write-in candidate that year, and
was voted MVP of the game. He followed this up by winning the NL MVP award. Garvey's
name would not be left off the All-Star ballot again, and he was elected as a starter the next six
years. In 1978, he became the first player to receive more than four million All-Star votes, and
he was named MVP of the game that year as well. In ten All-Star Games he hit .393, and his
slugging average of .955 is the highest of any player with more than 20 at-bats. Winner of
four Gold Gloves, Garvey retired with a .996 fielding average. Garvey's last Topps card
was in the 1987 series. Lightly creased. Staple hole at upper blank margin. Otherwise, fine
condition.
