On his United States Senate letterhead to Senator and Mrs. Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Begins: "Dear Pat and Liz". In full: "It was very thoughtful of you to take the time to send a holiday greeting. I appreciate hearing from you and hope you also have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Best wishes for the coming year." Handwritten postscript: "P.S. Looking forward to 1989 with you!" Steven Douglas Symms (b.1938) is a Republican congressman who served in the U.S. House from 1973 to 1981 and in the U.S. Senate from 1981 to 1993. After he graduated from the University of Idaho at Moscow in 1960, Symms served in the United States Marine Corps (1960-1963). He then tried his hand at a variety of professions (private pilot, fruit rancher, and co-editor of Idaho Compass) before entering politics. Symms was elected to serve in the 93rd Congress in 1972 and was reelected to the three succeeding Congresses. Symms was then elected to the United States Senate in 1980, and reelected in 1986. Following his career in politics, he co-founded Symms, Lehn Associates, Inc., a firm offering strategic business advice, and in 2001 he joined the government relations firm Parry, Romani & Deconcini.
