Jon Steven Young (born in 1961) had a spectacular senior year (1983) as quarterback for Brigham Young University, finishing the year with an 11-1 record, a spot on First Team All-American and a nomination for the Heisman Trophy (he came in second in the voting). Young then signed a record $40 million, ten-year contrct with the United States Football League in 1984, playing for two seasons before his team, the Los Angeles Express, went bankrupt. His next stop was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing starting quarterback for 19 games before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers on April 24, 1987. Starting as the back-up quarterback to Joe Montana, Young got his chance to lead the 49ers in 1991, after Montana was injured in the 1990 playoffs. He finished the season with an NFL best passer rating (101.8), and Young would go on to become the first quarterback to rack up a triple digit rating in consecutive seasons. After Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs before the start of the 1993 season, Young would remain at the helm of the 49ers for the rest of his career (through 1999). He was NFL Most Valuable Player in 1992 and 1994 and MVP of Super Bowl XXIX, and Young, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005, holds the NFL record for highest passer rating (he was the winner of six NFL passing titles). Young, who led the British delegation at the 2002 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in his native Salt Lake City, Utah, provides color commentary for NFL games on ESPN, and he works with his charity, Forever Young Foundation, and with a venture capital firm.
