Cover story: "Next Up for 49er/Steve Young:/The Cowboys". Depicts the San Francisco 49ers' 20-13 victory over the Washington Redskins in the divisional playoff at Candlestick Park. The 49ers' hopes for a Super Bowl berth were dashed, however, with a 30-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. During the 1992 season, quarterback Steve Young established himself as the 49ers' starter -- and won NFL MVP honors. Joe Montana, who had been out of action for nearly two years due to injuries, returned for the final game of the regular season, but returned to the bench during the playoffs. In 1993, with Montana traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, Young passed for 4,023 yards, again leading his team to the divisional playoffs (a 44-3 rout of the New York Giants) -- but another crushing defeat to Dallas (38-21). Young, who played for the 49ers from 1987-1997, finally led his team to victory in the Super Bowl in 1994 (capturing Super Bowl MVP honors in addition to his second NFL MVP).
