Commemorative envelope signed "Steven A Hawley". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 6¼x3½. With black ink stamp on left edge commemorating wind tunnel testing of the Space Shuttle at Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California. Postmarked Moffett Field, California, May 26, 1979. With one 13¢ American flag and Independence Hall stamp affixed. Hawley, born in Ottawa, Kansas in 1951, was Mission Specialist on five flights of the Discovery and Columbia between 1984 and 1999. An astronomer who worked at the United States Naval Observatory in 1972 and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory from 1973 to 1974, Hawley was Mission Specialist on STS-41D (Aug. 20 to Sept. 5, 1984, the maiden flight of the Discovery), STS-61C (Jan. 12-18, 1986), STS-31 (April-24-29, 1990, which deployed the Hubble Space Telescope), STS-82 (Feb. 11-21, 1997) and STS-93 (July 22-27, 1999, which deployed the Chandra X-Ray Observatory). Lightly toned and creased. Pen skipped while signing signature, which is legible. Normal postal stamps, which do not touch signature. Otherwise in fine condition.
