British black and white publicity photograph of Steven Spielberg on the set of Empire of the Sun.
Photograph signed: "Steven Spielberg". B/w, 10x8. British publicity photograph for his 1987 film, Empire of the Sun, picturing actors Christian Bale (left) and John Malkovich (right) flanking director Spielberg (not signig). Typed caption on verso: "EMPIRE OF THE SUN/Set to score another hit for top American filmmaker STEVEN SPIELBERG is his spell-binding new epic entitled 'EMPIRE OF THE SUN'. Totally different to his previous works such as 'The Colour Purple' and 'E.T.', this story tells of the terrifying drama that besets 'Jim Graham', an 11-year-old English schoolboy (played by newly-discovered young actor CHRISTIAN BALE) when the armed forces of Imperial Japan marched into Shanghai on December 8th 1941. It is described as a story of survival and courage based on J.G. BALLAD's best-selling book drawn from his own childhood experience with his parents during World War II. The production is said to be the first major Hollywood film ever shot on location in the Republic of China, and was arranged after complicated negotiations. The film employs 15,000 extras plus 500 American, British, Chinese and Spanish crew members, working simultaneously in three countries - China, England and Spain." The most commercially successful filmmaker in Hollywood history, Steven Spielberg (born in 1946) is lifelong cinema buff who began directing his first short movies while still a child. He won Academy Awards for Best Director for Schindler's List (1994) and Saving Private Ryan (1999), and Spielberg was nominated for the Best Director Oscar for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982). His long list of feature films includes Jaws (1975), The Blues Brothers (1980), The Color Purple (1985), Back to the Future (1985), Cape Fear (1991), Hook (1991), Jurassic Park (1993), Twister (1996), Men in Black (1997), Amistad (1997), The Mask of Zorro (1998), A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001), Catch Me If You Can (2002), Minority Report (2002), The Terminal (2004), War of the Worlds (2005) and Munich (2005), and Spielberg has produced or executive produced a long list of other films and TV miniseries. He has also written for films and appeared on the big screen as both an extra and as himself. Minor surface creases. Fine condition.
