Udall, who had served in the Air Force during WWII, was an outdoorsman and conservationist, and had actively defended conservation interests while serving on the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. He later wrote a book, The Quiet Crisis (1963) that gave a huge boost to the environmental movement. Udall also wrote syndicated columns on the environment.
