STIRLING COYNE
Ready to scribble a few lines for publication, he requests, "if you can't print all, say nothing. Pray throw the whole away."
Autograph Letter signed: "Stirling Coyne", 1 page, 5x8. Covent Garden, London, 1867 June 26 On letterhead of the Dramatic Authors' Society to "B Webster Esq.", in full: "A trifle for your D. C. Annual herewith. If I can scribble a few lines of anything by this evening I will send them to you. All I ask is if you can't print all, say nothing. Pray throw the whole away. Yours faithfully". Stirling Coyne (1803-1868) was a satirical playwright, the author of more than 60 plays, including 27 farces. His plays combined exaggerated characters, ridiculous plots and surprise endings with puns and deft dialogue. His humor anticipates the sophisticated plays of Wilde and Shaw. Coyne also contributed many humorous essays to the press, including no doubt the piece he is offering in this letter. "Stirling Coyne" was his true name, by the way, not a sly pen name. Edges and corners creased and worn. Multiple notches at edges. Lightly toned at edges. Ink lightly bled through to verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
