Book Page Signed: “Stoddard King” in black ink. 4¾x6½. Stoddard King (1889-1933) was
an American author and songwriter who in 1907 began working for The
Spokesman-Review, which led him to attend Yale University. While attending Yale, King
was an editor, press manager, fraternity member and continued to write for The
Spokesman-Review. He became a very popular writer for magazines across the country. Some
of his most known pieces are: “What the Queen Said” and “The Raspberry Tree”. He gained
the public appreciation for the humor he added to it and because he was gentle, sane, dignified
and friendly. During his time at Yale, he also helped write the song “There's a Long Long
Trail A-Winding”, which became a World War I anthem. After graduating from college,
King started working for Harper's Weekly as an associate editor. He also served in the
National Guard during World War I. In 1914 King joined the American Society of
Composers, Authors and Publishers. Even though he is known for many things, Stoddard
preferred to be recognized as a columnist for The Spokesman-Review. Toned. Otherwise, fine
condition.
